With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Juan (John) Aguillon at the age of 97. He lived a long, happy, and healthy life, surrounded by the love of his family. Having remained active and independent until nearly the very end, Juan leaves behind a legacy of strength, dedication, and cherished memories that will live on through the generations who were blessed to know him.
Juan proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, attaining the rank of Sergeant and receiving the Purple Heart Medal for his service and sacrifice. His courage, perseverance, and sense of duty reflected the values he carried throughout his life.
Following his military service, Juan pursued his passion for golf, building a rewarding career as a golf professional, superintendent, and golf course designer. His love for the game extended far beyond his professional career, earning him a special place in the golfing community. Juan was a founding member of PAGA and proudly became its first national champion, accomplishments that reflected both his talent and dedication to the sport. As a cherished member of the PAGA family, he shared not only his love of golf but also his camaraderie, friendship, and spirited presence on and off the course. His influence and the memories he created with fellow golfers will be treasured by the many people whose lives he touched throughout his years in the game.
Even after retirement, Juan continued to enjoy the simple pleasures that brought him happiness. He loved being outdoors, walking around the yard, swinging a golf club, and hitting balls whenever he could. He took pride in tending to the garden, checking on Margie's plants, and planting trees that he hoped would continue to grow long after he was gone. He often reminded his loved ones not to forget to water the trees he had planted. These simple routines brought him joy and reflected his appreciation for life's everyday blessings.
As the oldest of ten children, Juan understood the importance of family from an early age. Family was always his greatest priority, and he shared a deep bond with his siblings, his beloved wife, Lydia, and their three sons. Together, Juan and Lydia raised their children to work hard, enjoy life, treat others with respect, and stand up for what is right. Through his example, he taught his sons the importance of resilience, integrity, and compassion—lessons they will continue to carry with them throughout their lives.
Juan took immense pride in his ten grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren, who brought him tremendous joy. He also held a special place in his heart for his numerous nieces and nephews, extended family members, and beloved friends. To those closest to him, he was a source of wisdom, encouragement, and unwavering support. His greatest accomplishment was not found solely in his professional success or military honors, but in the family he helped build and the values he passed down.
Juan was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lydia Aguillon; his parents, Eligio Aguillon and Julia de Leon Aguillon; and his siblings, Raymond Aguillon, Juana Aguillon, Eliseo Aguillon, and Andrew Aguillon. His family finds comfort in knowing that he has now been reunited with those he loved and missed, welcomed into eternal peace.
Left to cherish his memory are his three loving sons: William (Margie) Aguillon, John (Monica) Aguillon, and Robert (Isabel) Aguillon; his ten grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; extended family members; and beloved friends. Each will carry a part of Juan's story forward, keeping his memory alive through the traditions, lessons, and love he leaves behind.
His family extends heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and nurses in the Intensive Care Unit and hospice unit at South Texas Health System–McAllen. Their compassionate care and the dignity and respect they showed Juan during his final days brought comfort to his loved ones. Their kindness will always be remembered with sincere appreciation.
Though saying goodbye is difficult, Juan's family takes comfort in knowing he lived a full and meaningful life. The trees he planted will continue to grow, the lessons he taught will continue to guide his sons, and the friendships he built on and off the golf course will remain a treasured part of his legacy. His life touched people in many ways, and the love and respect he earned throughout his 97 years will continue to be felt by all who knew him.
Dad, you devoted your life to taking care of us and making sure we would be prepared for whatever life brought our way. Now you can rest peacefully, reunited with Mom and the family who went before you. We will miss your presence, your wisdom, your reminders, and the simple joy of seeing you out in the yard doing what you loved. Life will be different without you, but you taught us how to be strong, how to care for others, and how to carry on.
Thank you for a lifetime of love, sacrifice, and unforgettable memories. We will honor you by living according to the values you instilled in us and by caring for one another as you always did. You can rest now, Dad, knowing that we will be fine.
You will forever be loved and deeply missed.
