He is preceded in death by his children, Esteban, Clotilda and
Gustavo “Freddy” Alfredo, whom he affectionally called “my boy.”
Mario was born in Monterrey, Mexico, on June 10th 1930, to Ansencio and Rebecca Cantu.
In his younger years, he traveled throughout Mexico and Spain and even trained as a bullfighter. He also served in the U.S. Army.
Later in life, he moved to Gary, Indiana, where he met his wife, Maria Elena.
Together they had 10 children, including:
Mario Jr., Cecilia Torres, Connie Burgos, Leticia, Cynthia, Alicia and Frank Cantu.
Mario loved horses, watching movie classics, golf and the Olympics.
But more than anything else, he loved being with his family.
When asked to describe their “Pops”, his children said,
“He was full of life, happy, witty, generous and genuine.”
Mario always put his children and grandchildren ahead of himself.
Mario will never be forgotten by those who knew him and loved him.
He is in God’s memory waiting for the resurrection as promised by God’s Son, Jesus Christ. (John 5:28,29) (Rev 21:3-4)
