Mercedes - Reynaldo "Rey" Barrera, age 47, went to God after a short illness on Thursday, November 10, 2022. Reynaldo was born on January 5, 1975 in Weslaco, Texas to Sylvia Contreras and Jesus Maria Barrera.
Rey is survived by his mother Sylvia Hawkins (Michael†), his girlfriend Martina "Marty" Valdez, his brothers Christopher and Paul Barrera. He is also survived by numerous aunts and uncles, cousins and friends.
Rey is preceded in death by his father Jesus Maria Barrera and his step father Michael Dean Hawkins and paternal grandparents Reynaldo and Evelia Ruelas Barrera and maternal grandparents Juan and Maria de los Dolores Contreras.
As a teenager, Rey was an accomplished athlete, playing football, baseball, basketball and participated in track at Mercedes High School. This love of sports continued for the rest of his life; his favorite teams were the Texas Rangers and the Dallas Cowboys. Continuing in the Barrera family tradition of love of music, Rey enjoyed Conjunto; Tejano and County. He never forgot his Barrera family roots in Falfurrias as he would often visit the family ranch; spending time visiting with his aunts and extended family there. For some years, he also trained horses as a hobby.
Over the years, Rey worked and trained with Rio's Boot Company of Mercedes in the making of high quality boots. He loved designing and constructing these high quality boots, for his many clients among those who were the band members of Intocable and even the president of Poland.
But most of all, Rey loved and enjoyed being with his friends and family, especially Marty, his girlfriend. He will be missed by many, and will forever live in our hearts. The Hawkins/Barrera family, would like to thank the medical staff of McAllen Regional, of special note Dr. Lee and the E.R. nurses for their high quality care. We would also like to thank all those generous people who have prayed for Rey and also shared their monetary gifts with us at this time.
A visitation for Reynaldo will be held Wednesday, November 16, 2022 and Thursday, November 17, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM with a Prayer Vigil at 7 PM (both days) at Funeraria del Angel Highland, 6705 North Fm 88, Weslaco, Texas 78596. Vermont Ave, Mercedes, Texas, followed by the burial at 11:00 AM at Highland Memorial Park, Weslaco, Texas 78596.
May he rest in peace and rise in Glory.
