Socorro Bocanegra

With her family by her side, Socorro Bocanegra, age 88, entered into eternal rest at her home in Weslaco, Texas, on June 25, 2025. Socorro was born on May 7, 1937 in Nazas, Durango, Mexico to Jose Bocanegra and Amelia Lugo.

Socorro’s work ethic was unmatched, as she dedicated 25 years of service as a custodian for Weslaco Independent School District, while also working at Milano’s Restaurant for 35 years. She found joy in simple routines of life, whether it was tending to her beloved plants, enjoying McDonald’s coffee, or cleaning with a broom and mop always in hand. More than anything, Socorro loved her family selflessly and unconditionally, instilling the values of courage, strength and resilience to those around her. She prepared us for life by teaching us to face our fears and, most importantly, to be strong. In her honor, we strive to lead meaningful and courageous lives, just as she taught us to do. Our brilliant and kindhearted mother, grandmother, and friend will be dearly missed.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Esmeralda Lopez (Juan), Sandra Perla Higgins, Marcela Luna (Juan "Pep" †), Leticia Holder (Chris), and Diana Granados Cepeda (Tony); her two step children Antonia Rodriguez and Gerardo Granados; and her two grandchildren Christopher Nuñez and Kaylee Luna. She also leaves behind her two sisters Ofelia Cabrales and Elsa Cruz and her caregiver Lolis Lopez.

Socorro is now eternally reunited with her husband, Refugio "Cuco" Granados; her daughter, Maricela Morales; her parents Jose Bocanegra and Amelia Lugo; and her brothers Felimon, Osvaldo, Fausto, Miguel and Pepe Bocanegra.

Visitation for Socorro will be held Sunday, June 29, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM with a Rosary recited at 7:00 PM at Funeraria del Angel Highland, 6705 FM 88, Weslaco, TX 78596. A funeral mass will occur Monday, June 30, 2025 at 10:00 AM at St. Joan of Arc, 109 S Illinois Ave, Weslaco, TX 78596, followed by the interment at 11:00 AM at Highland Memorial Park, 6705 FM 88, Weslaco, TX 78596
