Family and friends,
I regret I am unable to attend the memorial to Uncle George.  My current financial situation made it impossible to make it.  But at this time, I would like to put forth a theory.  I believe that Uncle George was the patriarch of the Edwards' family humor.   While Grandpa Edwards was the straight-faced joker,  Grandma Edwards the compassion-giver, and Aunt Irene a source of unconditional love, etc., Uncle George seemed to be in charge of making sure we laughed together.  
While growing up, when our extended family got together, it was very balanced by humor in some strange way.   For example, while Aunt Vivian is mocking our idiocy in true Dennis Leary-style, my dad, Wayne, is hugging our idiocy by being the perfectly entertained audience for our schemes.   While Uncle Corky encouraged us in our shenanigans, Uncle Matt made sure we didn't blow anything, or anybody, up.    And I feel it may have all started with Uncle George.   While Grandpa Edwards was working his mischief under his grumpy exterior, Uncle George was letting us in on the joke.  Between these characters, and a random selection of slightly warped parents, and slightly “off” cousins, I cannot remember a single family function during my childhood that was not one of the most fun-filled moments of my life.  And here at his memorial, I have to express that Uncle George was a big reason for that, in the way he was there for us in each of our lives.
He seemed to make sure that none of us took ourselves too seriously, and were able to laugh at ourselves.  He helped teach us that many times, mild self-deprecation can be extremely funny to those around us, and is a much happier path than being a “stick-in-the-mud”.  Note the number of popular comedians emulating this idea, and you can see that Uncle George was ahead of his time in this area.   He also epitomized the sarcastic but good-natured Edwards' wit that can be seen in all of us to some degree.   
We all wish we could spend more times with the ones we love after they pass.  This is especially true of the ones who made us happier people in general.  That being said, Uncle George will be missed an epic amount.  And I believe, that somewhere up there, he is looking down on us all, waiting for the next humorous moment we initiate, so that he can laugh his unique, deep, loud laugh.
