It's funny to talk about someone you knew as a young boy, because it seems those memories are so vivid even though it was 45 years ago. The Calderons moved in across Pine Street from us back when I was about five or six years old and I quickly became friends with Charlie. He was one of the funniest guys I had ever met and we had a blast playing sports at Montebello Gardens. He played basketball with me at Rio Hondo Park, and he led the league in scoring. That's because he shot so much...we nicknamed him "glory" as is in "glory hog". Then baseball at Grant Rea, and flag football at MG where we won a championship in fifth grade. You know all of those sports trivia answers and stories he knew, he got those all from me! Yes, I knew Andy, Joe, Abie, David and Sandra but it was Charlie who made me laugh so hard. You guys might remember that you didn't have a phone when you first arrived from Texas. Your relatives would call on our phone at home and I could never understand their Spanish, so I would run across
the street and call Mrs. Calderon to come to the phone. I'd always ask her what Charlie was doing. Those days were filled with such fun, from dressing up on Halloween, to walking to the Montebello plunge to go swimming, to going to the Santistevan market for sodas and candy, and playing those endless summer baseball games in front of the school next to my house, where we all wanted to be Sandy Koufax or Hank Aaron. My grandma took us to Dodger Stadium to see a game, and I was so happy you came. We were given skateboards at the same time, and thought we could be roller derby skaters. We played together nearly every day through 7th grade and then I moved, and only saw you one other time when we came back for a visit. But my friend, I will never forget you. I came to your wake and listened to every one talk about your life and I was so happy that you were happy and had a great family life. You certainly deserved it. I'm sure if we had met as adults, it would have been as if time had not passed. You would have made me laugh and I would have made you laugh. We would complain about the Rams leaving LA. And talk about those days on Pine Street. I will never forget you my friend. When I see you again, you better be ready to talk sports.

Charile I miss you so much!  You were a dear friend who make my day shine when you walked through the door. I looked forward to seeing you and talking to you. You made me laugh and most of all you made my day.  I know you are in heaven with Jesus smiling and telling him your jokes, and of course singing with him and his angels. My days have not been sunny since you left. I keep trying to see the beautiful sky but the clouds are in the way. I'm trying to get my smile back and the love for life I know you want me to have but I can't find it yet. I know it will come back one say soon but til then I am sad every day. I miss you poppa and I will always have you in my heart....

Charlie I love and miss you so much. I thank you for the laughter and love you gave our family. We will not be the same without you. You were my true love and you will live in my heart forever. Rest in peace. Until we meet again......

Brother, you're a special person. Always happy always making me smile, and of course your jokes always put a smile on my face. I truly believe you were a gift from God. Charlie, what you must know now that you have returned home is how your children are a direct reflection of your love.  They are kind, generous of spirit, fun and funny, loving and tender.  You will always be with us because you will always live in their hearts and we will always see you shine through them and their love for you.

Charlie, you entered a room with a smile everytime, your good nature and corney jokes will be forever remembered. I'm so sad God called on you so early, however your suffering has now passed. May peace be with you always.

My dear uncle Charlie, u were the best uncle anyone could ask for, you were kind and funny and always kind hearted. I will miss u and always remember u. Until we meet again uncle.
