After high school he studied photography at Rio Hondo College and took up the saxophone. He loved music and his interest in the saxophone was probably encouraged by his love for Earth Wind and Fire and the Commodores. A product of the 70s, one of his favorite disco songs was love disco style.

Gavino was a man of God. He carried his Catholic faith throughout his life. He attended mass regularly. In recent times, he attended mass with friend and neighbor, Mr. Garcia. They shared their faith and friendship weekly, ending with breakfast or coffee and doughnuts after mass.
Gavino could spark up a conversation with anyone and often did. He loved to laugh and often played pranks to get a good laugh, which sometimes would get him in trouble. He was loving, caring and giving of his time and heart. He loved his wife and family and was always supportive and reliable.
