We had the very best of what a mother should be and because of this she will always remain in our hearts and never forgotten.
She was loving, kind, non-judgmental, a good listener and a true optimistic individual. She always saw the light at the end of the tunnel.
She loved the Lord and prayed frequently, quietly, for her family, children and friends. A devoted Catholic, going to church frequently together with my father. Many times they would pick-up my Aunt Eleanor and the 3 of them would go to Saint Christopher's Catholic Church. They always told me about how much they liked the coffee and doughnuts the church served after the service.
Our mother was always there for us, whether it involved school plays, girl scouts, boy scouts, baseball, birthday parties, showers, celebrations of marriages, births, swimming parties and barbeques. She was always the master planner and we had the greatest times, growing up.
What the Lord intended a mother to be, is what he gave us, we were blessed to have her in our lives.
Things our mother used to like doing and loved to eat, example 1st thing in morning a cup of black coffee, before anything else. Next she watched "the price is right" and " General Hospital" on TV. Her favorite foods were Pepperoni Pizza with glass of wine or a glass of beer, In-N-Out burgers and fries, Cheese and crackers, avocado and toast, eggs over easy and Bacon. She also used to love caring for her Roses, plants and flowers (hydrangea's, gladiolus), in her backyard and front yard.
She loved getting the family together at her home for major holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. She loved to cook for everyone. She cooked things like Turkey with stuffing and mash potatoes with gravy, to homemade chicken and rice soup, Pozole soup or Menudo with limes, radish & cilantro, Italian food like 3-layer Lasagna with ricotta & parmesan cheese and sausage or Mexican food like enchiladas, tamales with rice and beans. It was all delicious and we could never get enough.
Through the years, she planned many birthday parties for her children and grandchildren setting up decorations, party games like pin the tail on the donkey, musical chairs. She made homemade cakes and cupcakes and accomplished getting many family members and friends together.
Besides, doing all these things, she still went to work, mostly part-time. In the early 1960's she worked for F.W. Woolworth company at the " West Covina Plaza". Later she worked for " West Covina Unified School District " for 21 years with the food service department. She prepared & served lunches for students and faculty. Later excelling to Cafeteria Manager. She worked for Edgewood High School, Willowood Middle School, California Elementary School. Her Grandson Daniel, remembers, when he used to go to work with her sometimes, that the students & faculty, always greeted her with a smile, saying "Hello Mrs. Reyes" and that she was like by many and was also known as the " Lunch Lady".
Our mother was blessed with many friends that she loved dearly. Her closest friends were the Huante's, Barbosa's and the Hoffman's. They shared many vacations together over the years, like Las Vegas, Cancun Mexico and Europe, as well as ocean cruises. Her best friend was Maria Huante who she has known since the 5th grade. Maria and her husband Ruben are the godparents of Irene's youngest child Ronald Joseph Reyes.
Sadly enough most of her friends are deceased, but we are still blessed with the presence of Ruben and Maria Huante, who are doing well.
When we were young our parents used to take us to church, every Sunday at St. Louis of France Catholic Church in La Puente, afterwards we would go out to a family breakfast. We all made our 1st Holy Communion and catechism school at St. Louis of France. I'm personally grateful that they shared and instilled their religion and belief in God the Father, with all of us.
Mom, we are comforted knowing you are peacefully resting, where there is no more pain, loneliness, tiredness or sadness. Rest in peace, we all love you dearly.
Father, please accept our prayer's, that our mother will be in heaven with you, when that hour comes, and that we will see her and our father, again in Heaven.
