When Mercedes Dominguez walked into the room, those in her company felt energy, an enthusiastic feeling of family. This was just one example of who Chelo was and how she impacted those around her. Chelo was a clever and witty person who always sought out the finest attributes in other people and knew how to make them smile. It was as if Chelo wanted to share all of their experiences, revel in their lives,and celebrate their discoveries. Chelo was tireless and had boundless enthusiasm that would serve her well throughout her life.
She was the daughter of Odilon and Mercedes Pena. Chelo was raised in Mexico and was always at the ready with a good joke. She grew up to be quite a humorous person. While some who knew Chelo might describe her as an idealist, her friends and family understood well that Chelo was always in pursuit of life’s endless possibilities and opportunities available to her. Her adventurous spirit brought her to Los Angeles in 1968 at the age of 35 and as a single mother.
Chelo was raised with eight siblings. She had one older sister Antonia and younger siblings; Guadalupe, Jesus Lucio, Reyes, Odilon, Maria de Jesus Santos, Lorenzo Hermenegildo, and Lorenzo. Chelo was very accepting and supportive of her family. She was perceived as the central person in her family in terms of keeping communication open between the family members. Whenever discord or tension arose within the home, Chelo was typically the member who was the quickest to forgive and help reunite. These traits served Chelo well in her adult life and, along with her wit, outgoing personality, and understanding of others, drew the admiration of many who knew her.
As a young girl, Chelo was outgoing, adventurous, and enjoyed a good challenge. In her spare time she would make tortillas for her family of 11. She became a central part of her family helping her mother raise her younger siblings. Chelo's memorable achievements included selling Avon, even in Juarez, Mexico and moving to Los Angeles on her own with her young child. Chelo had the ability to find amusement with almost any activity she participated in.
Chelo was a natural and creative parent who was willing to provide her family with all sorts of new and interesting experiences. For Chelo, parenting was a particularly enjoyable and pleasurable part of her life. She help her three children, as a single mother, succeed in completing their education and starting their own families.Chelo prioritized her three children and felt accomplished when they started their families. She then felt she could move on to finding a companion for herself. Soon after, she met Jesus Murrillo with whom she loved and cherished for forty years.
Chelo was blessed with four children: Maria del Carmen, Luis Lorenzo (deceased), Enrique (deceased), Dolores. They were also blessed with eleven grandchildren, Micheal, Brenda, Vanessa, Luis, Artie, Evelyn, Rebecca, Brandy, Johnny, Violeta, Uri. Now there are twenty nine great-grandchildren; Valeria, Michael, Krystal, Gabriel, Destiney, Dominic, Samantha, Zachary, Desiree, Louis, Anthony, Larry, Leonel, Juanito, Tasun, Truth, Tiera, Halo, Gemini, Donavon, Aqua, Jose, Valentin, Analia, Zamian, Zariah, Zellis, Zaiden, and Layla. There are even six great-great-grandchildren; Mason, McKynzie, Stephan, Esabella, Sophia, Avery, and two more on the way.
Chelo was uplifted by new ideas and was excited by life’s possibilities, traits that made her an exceptional worker. Her primary occupation was homemaker (and seller of Avon). She worked for 20+ years raising her grandchildren. Chelo was enterprising, inventive and working against deadlines seemed to energize her. She always enjoyed collecting the neighborhood orders and interacting with others. Chelo loved watching novelas, cooking, and visiting family. She had a knack for being able to multi-task in order to create time for all of her family. She was a woman who was dedicated and devoted to her faith. She was a member of St. Martha's for 30+ years. She was sympathetic and able to empathize with others and she used these qualities to the fullest while working tirelessly for her beliefs.
Chelo's love of improvising in her daily life was a perfect fit for her enjoyment of traveling. She loved to plan a yearly trip and she took her vacations seriously, well, as seriously as she possibly could. Her favorite vacations included visiting her grandchildren and family in El Paso, Texas. She had a long list of family that she had to visit each time she was in town!
Chelo Dominguez passed away on 27 of November, 2019 at home with family in La Puente, California. Services were held at St. Martha's Church. Chelo was laid to rest in Rose Hills in Whittier, California.
There was always a certain style and inventiveness to Chelo. She was a dynamic, self-expressive person who was forever looking to celebrate the endless possibilities life had to offer. She had a knack for being clever, creative and witty, and for others, was a joy to be around. While she was often fiercely independent, it seemed as if many others looked to Chelo Dominguez for inspiration, leadership, wisdom, and even courage. Chelo was always more than willing to share life’s experiences and a smile with her loved ones. She will be truly missed.

Incluso hay seis tataranietos; Mason, McKynzie, Stephan, Esabella, Sophia, Avery y dos más en camino.
