Richie, a cherished soul who touched the lives of many, passed away after a sudden illness. Born in Hazleton, PA, Richie was the beloved son of Michael Sr. and Marie (Roman) Hovanetz. He was predeceased by his parents, and his brother Michael Jr., but leaves behind a legacy of laughter, love, and camaraderie.
Richie is survived by his devoted sister, Donna Albertine, and her husband, Tom; his brother Gary Hovanetz and wife, Debi Brown; his nephews Corey and Christopher, and niece, Michelle. He is also survived by his brother, Paul Hovanetz, and sister, Marie D'Amato, her husband Dan, and their daughter Ella. Alongside his immediate family, Richie was adored by many cousins, friends, and coworkers who will miss him dearly.
A proud graduate of Hazleton High School's Class of 1976, Richie went on to attend York College, where he studied Police Science. His early years saw him working as a lifeguard during summer breaks. Richie embraced the rhythm of life with varied careers, first as a coal miner and later as a dock worker for a large bread company. But it was in California, at the Santa Anita Racetrack, that Richie found his calling as a bartender, serving patrons with warmth and vitality since 1983.
Richie was a man of boundless energy, known for his great smile and unmistakable loud laugh. He liked weightlifting and many team sports, excelling particularly in baseball, where he garnered numerous awards. His passion for sports was matched by his love for card games. We all still remember a one-on-one tug of war with our cousin, Johnny O'Barra, at the Roman family reunion.
A celebration of Richie's life will be held on October 22, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the Horseshoe Bar, Santa Anita Racetrack, located at 285 W Huntington Dr, Arcadia, CA 91007. It is a fitting venue, where Richie created countless memories and friendships over the years.
In this time of grief, the family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Richie's friends who stood by him during his illness. Special thanks to Lauren, whose support and care were invaluable. The family is deeply appreciative of the love and kindness shown during this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Richie's memory can be made to a charity of your choice. His laughter, his spirit, and his love will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
