Agnes Elizabeth Naughton, age 90, passed away on Wednesday, June 25, 2025. There will be a celebration of life for Agnes on July 10th at 11:00 am at the Lutheran Church of Hope, 925 Jordan Creek Parkway in West Des Moines, Iowa.
Agnes E. (Ostergaard)(Coleman) Naughton was the 4th of seven children born to Jens and Ebba Ostergaard in East Orange, NJ. She is survived by 2 sisters and one brother who still live in New Jersey.
After graduating from Clifford Scott High School, she moved all the way from New Jersey to Des Moines, Iowa, at the behest of her widowed Danish mother, to enroll at Grandview College, a school with Danish roots. There she met her future husband, Frederick William "Bill" Coleman, who passed away in December 2024.
Together, they are survived by three daughters: Sharon Coleman Mathews, Beth (Chris) Coleman Collins, and Carla Coleman Smith, as well as 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
From childhood, she has known the holy scriptures, which can make one wise unto salvation.’ 2 Timothy 3:15. Her faith in the LORD, Jesus Christ, and her deep love of family have been the driving forces of her life. Our mother had many talents and was a hard worker. She could sew and decorate, play the piano, and liked to dance. She also LOVED the ocean! Her many accomplishments include working as a dental assistant and graduating from Drake University with a BA degree in Elementary Education. She was a teacher for many years and became a reading specialist.
After retiring from teaching, Agnes married Colonel John Naughton. They lived in Urbandale, Iowa, and enjoyed traveling, talking, and going out to eat before he too passed away in 2002. Agnes lived in Urbandale until she was hospitalized and then died on June 25, 2025.
Our mother and grandmother made us laugh, and she was fun. She loved us deeply, and we will miss her always.
