Antonia "Tone" M Murillo

Services will be held on Thursday, August 6, at McLaren's Resthaven Chapel, 801 19th Street, West Des Moines, Iowa 50265. Visitation will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., with the funeral service beginning at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be held from 12:00 to 12:30 p.m.

Tone was born on November 22, 1966, in West Des Moines, Iowa, to Louis and Laura (Brooks) Murillo. She grew up in the Valley Junction neighborhood alongside her four siblings: Eddie (Bertha), Janice (Richard) Gooden, John (Janet), and Carmen Locke.

She graduated from Dowling Catholic High School in 1985. She went on to attend the Franciscan University of Steubenville in Steubenville, Ohio, where she majored in Business. During her college years, she earned the nickname “Hoot”, enjoyed DJ’ing parties and met new friends from all over the world. She was a member of the Sigma Phi sorority and a Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) sweetheart. In recent years, she earned a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate from the University of Arizona and enjoyed teaching English online to young children in China.

Tone's wide-ranging hobbies and passions included fishing, cooking, baking, painting, photography, woodworking with her dad, listening to music, making mixed tapes and playlists, going to concerts, watching softball, basketball, soccer, and ice hockey, researching family genealogy, reading, listening to True Crime Podcasts, and watching movies. Toni was an avid Hawkeye, Yankees, and Notre Dame fan. She treasured playing trivia with her family and friends at F & O's. She rarely missed a Friday trivia game, and that time together was precious. Toni adored her dogs, Mickey, Samwise, and Mr. Darcy.

Toni was passionate about bringing people together and organizing family events, including the tradition of the annual Murillo family June fishing trip and family reunions. She had princess parties for her great-nieces and outings with her great-nephews.

Tone is survived by her siblings, Janice and John; her uncle, Jackie Murillo; 15 nieces and nephews; 30 great-nieces and nephews; numerous great-great-nieces and nephews; and a large extended circle of family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Laura Murillo; her siblings, Eddie Murillo, Carmen Locke, and Michael Davis; her nieces and nephews, William David Murillo, Eric Locke, and Melissa Murillo; and her aunts and uncles, Joseph Murillo, Josie Bejarno, June Diaz, Trina Diaz, Frankie Bates, Sally Clark, Rachel Murillo, Shirley Hanlin, Betty Lloyd, Gaylord Brooks, William Brooks, and Richard Brooks.

Tone fiercely loved her family and friends. She was always finding ways to bring joy to others. Antonia, aka “Toni, Hoot, Tone,” will be deeply missed by all her friends and family, but we are comforted knowing she is now resting in peace.
