

Barbara Rose Mayfield, 66, passed away on June 24, 2017 at home surrounded by her family after a brave fight with cancer. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 1, 2017, at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at McLaren’s Chapel in West Des Moines.
Barbara was born in Jackson, Missouri, on July 15, 1950, to Gilbert and Bernice (Starzinger) Steiner. She dedicated her life to her family and to her communities. Barbara graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 1972, then earned a Master’s Degree in 1983.
She spent 30 years in the southeast Missouri and Fort Leonard Wood areas working in the area of behavioral health. Barbara touched countless lives; protecting battered women and children, counseling individuals and families, and keeping families together.
She attended Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in West Des Moines, where she contributed her beautiful voice by singing in the adult choir.
Barb was the loving mother of two sons, Gabe (Teresa) Mayfield, and their son, Bishop of Milan, Ohio and Tim (Emily) Mayfield, and their sons Spencer and Owen of West Des Moines, Iowa. Barb was the beloved sister of Nancy, Betty, Mary Ann, Richard, and Mark. She was preceded in death by her mother, Bernice and her father, Gilbert.
She will always be remembered for her smile and giggle that could brighten a room.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Zion Lutheran Church, 286 Pocahontas Main St., Pocahontas, MO 63779, Lutheran Hour Radio broadcast program, Iowa Lutheran Hospital, or UnityPoint Hospice.
