Bob White, 77, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Friday at McLaren’s Resthaven Chapel. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until service time Friday.
Bob was born in Carbondale, IL the son of Virgil and Cynthia White. He lived and grew up in Carbondale where he graduated from Southern Illinois University. He then moved to the great state of Iowa where he started his teaching passion. He was a Spanish teacher at Roosevelt High School for 18 years and then worked at the Iowa Capital as a doorkeeper for the Iowa Senate.
Bob was a member of the Men’s Garden Club, Iowa Partners of Yucatan, Sister States, and the Retired Teachers Association. He had a passion for life, family, friends and fishing. He loved traveling to various countries studying cultures, history, and eating local foods. Bob was commonly referred to by his Spanish students as “Senior Blanco.” He also loved watching the St. Louis Cardinals.
Surviving are his wife, Marjorie; son, Matthew (Laurie) White of West Des Moines; daughter, Lynnette White (Gary) of Clive; step-daughter, Rita Mae Fleener of Des Moines; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a cousin, Diane Byrd.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to Mercy Hospice or the National Parkinson Foundation.
