Charles “Chip” N. Giles III, age 62, of Grimes passed away on Wednesday, April 23rd, 2025 at Kavanagh House of Des Moines. Chip had an initial stroke in January and was rehabilitating well but suffered a second stroke in April from which he was unable to recover.
Chip was born and raised in West Des Moines by his parents Charles and Doris Giles and attended Valley High School. He furthered his education at the University of Iowa. After moving back to Des Moines, Chip married Joyce Campbell Giles and raised two daughters, Katherine and Elisabeth. Joyce passed in 2017 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Chip was blessed to find a life partner in Cindy Haney, and they formed a loving blended family. Chip worked in business for many years before finding a second career helping customers find their perfect vehicle, working most recently as a car salesman at Granger Motors.
Chip enjoyed music, biking, golfing, walking his dog Eddie, going for drives, and spending time with family, grandchildren and friends. He loved all Iowa Hawkeye sporting events, especially basketball and football.
He is survived by his daughters Katie Giles (Alex Van Gerpen) and Beth Giles (Tristan Miller); loving partner Cindy Haney; bonus daughters Alli (Jared) Rotert and Kila Haney (Charlie Barry); two beloved grandchildren Bennett Van Gerpen and Sage Rotert; uncle Merrill and aunt Joline Halter of Arizona; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Doris and his wife Joyce.
A gathering to celebrate Chip’s life will be held on his birthday, June 13th at Crown Point Community Center in Johnston. Family and friends are welcome between 5-8:30pm. Hawkeye gear is encouraged.
The family would like to thank the staff at MercyOne Rehabilitation Hospital and On With Life (Ankeny) who were instrumental in Chip’s recovery. We would also like to thank the doctors and several nurses at Iowa Methodist Medical Center.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the “Family of Chip Giles”. The contributions will be distributed to MercyOne Rehabilitation Hospital and On With Life (Ankeny).
