Cheryll LaRee Swalwell - Hughes

Cheryll was the daughter of Russell and Doris Mowen from Maxwell, Iowa. Cheryll was born in a tenant house on her grandfather’s farm at Maxwell, Iowa on October 23, 1932. She grew up on the farm, attended Maxwell schools, and graduated from Maxwell High School, April 1950. She married her high school sweetheart, Everett Swalwell, in 1951 and together they raised five children. Everett died in 1979 at the age of 46.

Cheryll entered the business world in 1976 as a Realtor-Associate in Des Moines, Iowa and later as a Realtor-Broker in Storm Lake, Iowa. She married Dr. Frank Hughes and moved to Storm Lake, Iowa in 1981. She was employed at Buena Vista College as an Assistant Director of Development and later as Director of Alumni. She was enticed back to the world of real estate by a realtor friend. Together, they established their own firm known as Real Estate-Specialists. Upon retirement, Cheryll and Frank retired to Sun Lakes, Arizona where they lived for fifteen years. They returned to Iowa in 2010. Frank died in 2015 at the age of 88.

Cheryll was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Swalwell, husband Dr. Frank Hughes, son Rick Swalwell (Theresa Rupp-Swalwell), step-daughter Kathy Hughes Custer, step son-in-law Bob Lamote, brother George Mowen, sister Bobbie Purdue, sister Virginia Henricksen.

Cheryll was First Runner-up Miss Story County in 1951 (Miss America Preliminary). Cheryll loved life, good music, playing piano, dancing, entertaining, comedy, reading, computer, and playing bridge.

Cheryll was a member of P.E.O. Chapter HX, West Des Moines, Iowa.

Cheryll is survived by her children Linda Garcia (Jose), Ron Swalwell (Ann), Randy Swalwell (Dave Waggoner), Kim Swalwell (Terri Davisson), daughter-in-law Karen Novak Swalwell, step-daughter Helen Hughes Lamote, step-son Tom Hughes (Rosemary), step son-in-law Todd Custer, eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren.

Cheryll chose Cremation. A Private Burial and Celebration of Life will be decided by the family.
