Cora Jean Hallock (Carter), born on Wednesday, July 7, 1937 to Lee Alvin and Eva Sophia Carter, passed peacefully at Arbor Springs on Wednesday, February 19, 2020, after a short but difficult battle with Alzheimer’s.
Cora was born in Lorimor, Iowa and moved to Des Moines/West Des Moines as a young girl. Cora graduated from Valley High School with her class in 1955. She was a successful banker, as a Manager in the Installment Loan department for 33+ years at Iowa Des Moines National Bank / Norwest Bank, currently known as Wells Fargo. She retired at age 55 and spent the next 27 years enjoying family and friends, gardening, going to Minnesota on fishing trips, crocheting, volunteering and taking care of her fur babies.
Cora gave birth to a daughter, Rebecca Rae Moore (Carter), in 1963 and raised her as a single parent….. Until one spring day she went into the Dutch Boy Paint store in Clive, where she ran into Ronald Porter Hallock. Now, Cora and Ron’s paths had crossed many years prior, as he, too was in the “banking” business. Who knew upon their encounter on this specific day, he would become the love of her life, bringing along 2 daughters, a son and their spouses, to complete the set??? Well, God had plans for them and on February 6th, 1982, Cora and Ron were married and shortly thereafter, moved to Stuart, Iowa, where they both enjoyed the small-town life. After Ron passed away, Cora began volunteering at Iowa Lutheran Hospital Gift Shop. She loved this so much that it soon evolved into a fulltime position as the Gift Shop Assistant Manager. This brought her back to Des Moines, where she bought a house on the corner of 44th and Urbandale. This little house brought Cora much joy, as she loved tending to her flowers, hedges and yard. During Cora and Ron’s marriage, they attended St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church. Cora found herself enjoying the services and fellowship. In 2007, Cora traveled with a team from St. Timothy’s on a Mission trip to New Orleans, following Hurricane Katrina, where they provided guidance, food and friendship to those whose lives were affected by this tragic storm.
Cora was preceded in death by her Mother, Eva Sophia Carter; Father, Lee Alvin Carter; Brother, Sonny Carter; Sister-in-Law, Vicki Carter; Daughter, Linda Anderson; 2 nephews and many Aunts, Uncles and Cousins.
