Cosmas Lerence Spears, 65, passed away peacefully Sunday, August 26, 2018 at Kavanagh House on 56th Street in Des Moines. A memorial mass will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, August 30, 2018 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in West Des Moines with burial of his cremated remains following at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Cosmas was born May 7, 1953 in Brooklyn, NY to Clifford and Shirley (Scott) Spears. He worked as certified automotive technician at various dealerships for over 48 years. He ended his career working for Bob Brown Chevrolet. His family would like to thank Ron Brown for his kindness and generosity as Cosmo’s health continued to fail over the last several months. Cosmo was a big NHRA drag racing fan and rebuilt several cars of his own over the years in hopes of hitting the race track himself one day. He also enjoyed fishing, whether it was deep sea fishing with his brother, Damian, or at his son’s pond in New Virginia, he loved it all. Cosmo loved his three children dearly and never missed a choral concert, a cheerleading event or a chance to cheer from the stands at a ball game. Cooking was a passion of Cosmo’s. He mastered the art of smoked ribs and made the best fried chicken in town.
Cosmas is survived by his three children, Chris Spears (Chad) Engelkes of New Virginia, and Emily and Tyler Spears of Clive; siblings, Claudia Spears of Staten Island, NY, Angel Johnston of Henderson, NV, Damian Spears of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Martin Spears of Long Beach, CA; and many nieces and nephews to include some of his most favorite people; Sue Mishler of Clive, Molly (Jake) Atkins, and Nick Mishler of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Darlene and Jo Spears.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Make a Wish Foundation or HCI Hospice.
