Deanna Jean May, 67, was called home on Saturday, June 13, 2026, in Des Moines after a short and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 1 at McLaren's Resthaven Chapel in West Des Moines. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 Thursday, July 2 at McLaren's with burial at the Norwalk Cemetery.
Dee, as she was affectionately known, was born December 6, 1958, in Des Moines, IA to Dale and Donna Munyon. She graduated from Lincoln High School and married her high school sweetheart, Richard "Dick" May. A few years later, they welcomed daughters Amy and Carrie. She spent many years babysitting for families who became like her own and later worked in the Clerk's Office at the Warren County Courthouse, retiring after more than 25 years of dedicated service. She was always a natural and nurturing caregiver, providing care to her husband for over 20 years as he fought his own battle with cancer. She had a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone.
She loved traveling - especially trips with her sisters—coffee dates with girlfriends, shopping anywhere and everywhere, watching bridal TV shows, but most of all she loved her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a constant presence at her grandchildren's school events, dance and music recitals, and baseball games. After retirement, she joyfully returned to her caregiving roots, providing weekly care for her grandsons, Drew and Logan, and special "Grandma" time with Daniel and Leslie in Kansas City.
Dee is survived by her two daughters, Amy (Bobby) Gilliam and Carrie (Luc) DuBay, grandchildren Daniel and Leslie Gilliam and Drew and Logan DuBay; sisters Deb Gauldin and Denise (Tim) Hall; and numerous loving cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dick, and parents Dale and Donna Munyon.
Memorial donations in Dee's name may be directed to EveryStep Kavanaugh House in Des Moines to support their compassionate hospice care.
