Born on July 30th, 1956, Diane was a beacon of love, strength, intelligence, and kindness. She touched the lives of many with her warm heart and unwavering dedication to her family. Diane devoted her life to being a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Diane will be remembered for her generosity, her laughter that could light up any room, and the countless acts of kindness that defined her character. She was a woman of deep faith, finding solace and strength in her beliefs throughout her life's journey. Diane loved hosting gatherings for her family, friends and faith community. She was the first to throw a shower, bake cookies for a loved one, host a meal or lend a helping hand. Her talents of creating a welcoming space for others to spend quality time together will be greatly missed.
Diane spent thirty-five years teaching middle school and high school students with skill, compassion, cleverness, and love. As an English teacher, religious studies teacher, speech and debate coach, and yearbook and newspaper advisor, she spread her love of the written word and the virtue of hard work to thousands of students in the greater Des Moines area.
Diane is survived by her husband of 44 years, Mark. Together they created a life filled with love, laughter, faith, joy, and shared memories. She is also survived by her four adoring children: Jessica Smith, Teresa Stackley, Michael Hicks, and Katherine Pettit. Diane was a source of inspiration and a pillar of support for her children, always encouraging them to pursue their dreams and instilling in them the values of love and compassion. The family circle was further expanded by the inclusion of Quintin Smith, Fred Stackley, Leah Timmerman, and Zech Pettit, who became integral members of Diane’s family. Their presence brought joy and additional layers of love to her life, enriching the family tapestry she held so dear. Diane’s favorite role was grandmother to her five grandchildren: Nia, Will, Violet, Nora, and Emmy Lu. Her love for them was immeasurable, and she cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren; imparting wisdom and creating lasting memories that will be treasured for generations.
Additionally, Diane is mourned by her father Don Evans, mother-in-law Sally Hicks, eight siblings: Tom (Patty), Dan (Mary Clare), Julie, Joe (Jill), Jim (Leydi), Larry (Barb), Mary, and Beth (Bob), sister-in-law Maureen (Randy) and many nieces and nephews. The bond she shared with her brothers and sisters was unbreakable, a testament to the importance she placed on family unity.
A visitation will be held on Feb. 6th from 3-5pm at McLarens Resthaven Chapel in West Des Moines and a service to celebrate Diane’s life will be held on Feb 7th at 12pm at Lutheran Church of Hope Grimes campus. Family and friends are invited to join in commemorating a life well-lived and sharing stories that capture the essence of this remarkable woman.
Diane’s departure leaves a void that can never be filled, but her memory will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know and love her. May she find eternal peace.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to YWAM Salem, OR, Lutheran Church of Hope, or a charity close to your heart.
