Dorothy P. Strand-Kendall, 81, passed away on Thursday, July 5, 2012 at Ramsey Village in Des Moines. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 14, 2012 at Capitol Hill Lutheran Church in Des Moines followed by a Memorial Service at 11 a.m. Burial of cremated remains will be at a later date at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.
Dorothy was born December 27, 1930 in Des Moines, IA the daughter of William and Marie (Caldwell) Thomas. She graduated from East High School in 1949. Dorothy worked as a secretary at Statesman’s Group and Lazy Ike. She was a member of Capitol Hill Lutheran Church where she also served on the Altar Guild, in Naomi Circle and other various church groups, Lions Club in Osceola and Pleasant Hill and Iowa Lutheran Hospital Auxiliary. Dorothy loved God, her church and family, swing and square dancing, country and Christian music, singing, traveling, working in her yard with her flowers and doing genealogy.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Beryl Kendall of Des Moines; three daughters, Karin Strand of Altoona, Linda (Clifford) Squires of Des Moines and Laura (Charlie) Hills of Austin, TX; two step-sons, Mike (Sherrie) Kendall of San Diego, CA and Mark (Debra) Kendall of Prescott, AZ; eight grandchildren, Shannon, Clarissa, Melissa, Misty, Erika, Sarah, Dustin and Rachel; thirteen great-grandchildren and two sisters, Bette Haviland of Clive and Mary (Herk) Campbell of Omaha, NE. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Gene Strand; great-grandson, Brandon Eckstein, two sisters, Louise (Elmer) Rohner and Helen King and brother-in-law, Roy Haviland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Capitol Hill Lutheran Church or Iowa Hospice.
