Douglas Richard Miller passed away Saturday, September 11, 2010, at the Community Living Center of Vets Hospital in Des Moines at age 85. He was born on January 10, 1925 in Sioux City, Iowa. Doug graduated from Central High School early to enlist in the U.S. Army and served in the European theater during WWII.
Doug and his wife Doris were wed in Sioux City on August 17, 1946, celebrating their 64th anniversary this past month. Surviving are his wife, Doris of West Des Moines, and their 3 children, Carol (Gary) Wiezorek of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Kent(Marilyn) of Tucson, Arizona; Nancy (Norm)Higginbottom of West Des Moines. Grandchildren: Carie, Travis, Kaytie, Kelly, Joshua and Luke, great-grandchildren: Austin. Dylan, Kylie, Abby, Emma, Elly and Angelynn.
In Sioux City, Doug worked for Iowa Public Service as Assistant Superintendent in charge of the opening of the George Neal Power Plant in Sloan. After retiring from I.P.S., Doug was employed at The Glass House, and at the Power Plant at the University of Northern Iowa In Cedar Falls, Iowa. In 1995 Doug and Doris moved to West Des Moines to be closer to their family. His special interests beside his loving family included golf, football, coins, and WWII memorabilia. He was also a member of the American Legion.
A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 17, 2010 at Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines. He has donated his body to Des Moines University for Parkinson’s research.
