Eugene C. Swanson

Eugene C. Swanson, 83, passed from this life on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at Taylor House Hospice. Funeral services are 10 AM Monday, July 12, 2010 at McLaren’s Chapel in West Des Moines with interment at Resthaven Cemetery.

Gene was born on May 10, 1927 in Callender, IA the son of Claude M. and Cora S. (Comstock) Swanson. He graduated in 1945 from North High School and attended Grandview College. He served in the United States Marine Corp during WWII. Gene married Ruth Crowley on October 26, 1947 in Washington D.C. Following her death in 1972 he married Eva Burris and she preceded him in death in 1990.

Gene was a Journeyman Pressman for the Des Moines Register for 36 years. Following his retirement he worked with HyVee for 18 years. He was a member of the Gnemeth Masonic Lodge #522 of West Des Moines and the Za Ga Zig Shrine Temple.

Survivors are children, Ken(Carie) Swanson of Bullhead City, AZ; Kendra (Jim) Kirkpatrick of West Des Moines; Karen (Mark) Jackson of Ankeny; step-daughters Trudy (Mike) Jackson; Ruby (George) Tollesson; thirteen grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; sister Marge (Jim) Reese of Bondurant and sister-in-law Carol Swanson of Grimes.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Gerald Swanson.

Gene enjoyed family, friends, his pets, traveling, collectibles, and doing crossword puzzles.

Visitation with the family is 4-6 PM Sunday with Masonic Rites at 6 PM at McLaren’s Chapel.
