Grover J. “Hank” Hankins, 85, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2014 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center having suffered from a serious lung disease. Visitation will be held beginning at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 with services beginning at 3 p.m. at McLaren’s Chapel. Burial with U.S. Air Force military honors will follow at Resthaven Cemetery.
Hank was born and raised in Shenandoah, IA and lived most of his life in the Des Moines area where he was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in West Des Moines.
Hank ~ Dad ~ Pa-Pa Hankins ~ Grand Dad ~ Grandpa Grover retired following his successful 40 - year employment at Pioneer Hybrid International. One of his most cherished memories include business travel abroad with the love of his life, Betty. Coach Hankins will be remembered by many who were affiliated with the Ft. Des Moines Little League in the 1960’s. Hank enjoyed playing golf, and then watching golf matches on T.V. when his health no longer permitted him to be out on the course. His many last years were filled with the opportunity to help fellow residents at Fairmeadows Retirement Village in West Des Moines.
Surviving Grover include the following: Sister, Shirley Johnson (Johnnie) of Des Moines; Brother, Charles Marshall of Des Moines; Daughter, Elizabeth (Becky) O. Sienkiewicz and her husband, Kim, of Urbandale; Grandchildren, Gregory D. Hankins II of Des Moines, Christopher B. Hankins (Katie Shell) of Urbandale and their Mother, Reneé Sciachitano of Des Moines, Joshua R. Sienkiewicz (Trisha Grissom; Tyler and Kassidy Grissom) of West Des Moines and Joanna C. Sienkiewicz of New York, New York; and a Great-Grandchild, Seth A. Hankins of Urbandale. He was preceded in death by his Daughter, Linda O. Hankins; Son, Gregory D. Hankins; Great-Grandson, Christian Ryan Sienkiewicz; and Hank’s Wife, Elizabeth (Betty) O. (Smith) Hankins.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Des Moines Arthritis Foundation or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
