Harry Thomas Orput, 87, Johnston, passed away July 3, 2023. A graveside service will be held Monday, July 10th at the Resthaven Cemetery Mausoleum in West Des Moines at 2:30 pm, followed by a memorial service at 3 pm at McLaren's Resthaven Chapel.
Harry was born on February 26, 1936 in Lincoln, Nebraska to Harry and Mildred Orput. He went to Lincoln High School and graduated in 1954. He served in the Army of the United States from 1956 to 1958 in Germany. When he returned from Active Duty, Harry attended the University of Nebraska. In 1959, he met the love of his life, Rosemary Eitel. They married in 1960 and had 2 children, Jill and John. Harry worked as a traveling salesman for Big Smith, as well as, Curlee Clothing Company which took them to several Midwest states.
In 1978, he and Rosie opened Gene Ann’s Hallmark in Ankeny, Iowa, and later opened a store in Boone, Iowa. Harry’s grandchildren were dear to him and he enjoyed following all their sports and activities. He was a long-time member of the Hyperion Country Club and enjoyed golfing, traveling and spending time with lifelong friends. Harry and Rosie spent much of their retirement in Sarasota, Florida.
Harry is survived by his wife, Rosemary; son, John (Shannon) Orput; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Tyler) Regan, J.J. Orput, and Tessa Orput. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jill Orput.
