Howard D. Hansen, 82, passed away on Monday, June 20, 2011 at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at McLaren’s Chapel with burial at Resthaven Cemetery.
Howard was born February 4, 1929 in Garden Grove, Iowa to Harold and Nellie (Jones) Hansen. He was a tire builder for 32 years at Firestone and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Howard was past commander of Highland Park American Legion Post 374 and past commander and adjutant of the 40/8 in Des Moines. He enjoyed gardening, traveling, playing cards, Prairie Meadows, going out to eat, drives in the country, cooking and playing bingo at Highland Park American Legion.
Howard is survived by his daughter, Renee (Ritchie) Thornburg of Waukee; sister-in-law, Judy Hansen of Bettendorf and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene Hansen; three sisters, Hilda Lane, Betty Simms and Katherine Bishop and two brothers, Kenneth and Dale Hansen.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at McLaren’s Chapel.
