Jary J. Gaudineer, 75, died peacefully Monday morning at Methodist Hospital surrounded by his immediate family. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 23, 2010 at St. Augustin Catholic Church, 42nd and Grand.
Jary was born November 16, 1934 in Des Moines, Iowa to Jary B. Gaudineer and Dolores Phillips Goulet. He attended East High School and was proud to be a member of the Class of 1953 even though he ended up graduating from Helix High School after a semester in California.
He served in the Army in communications during the Korean War. In 1960 he went to work in the family business at Barrick Roofing. He eventually purchased the roofing company and added sheet metal fabricating to the business. He was a Past President of the Iowa Roofing Contractors Association. Under his direction the company was nationally recognized and received numerous awards for quality product and service. He retired in 1998 and took on new jobs of transporting grandchildren, attending their events, and caring for Gaudineer Properties. He became an avid reader including crime novels, books by author, Dan Brown and books that his granddaughter, Courtney, read including Harry Potter and Pendragon.
On November 19, 2010 Jary would have celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary with his wife, Cecilia. They enjoyed traveling, spending time at their cottage at Clear Lake, Iowa but most of all they enjoyed spending time with their family. He was known by Fred, grandpaw, Pawpaw or GP. He was a tech savvy grandpa who kept a Facebook page, knew how to text, skype, and cruised the items on EBay and Craig’s List.
In addition to Cecilia survivors include daughter, Julie Bebensee (Jeff); granddaughters, Stephanie, Courtney, and Kaitlyn of West Des Moines; son, Jary Kevin Gaudineer of Santa Barbara, CA; daughter, Beth Barkley (Marty); grandson, Janse and grandaughter Jaryn of West Des Moines; sister, Marilyn Trotter of Brazil, IN and step-sister, Madeline Freel of Runnells.
Jary had a wonderful sense of humor and his lighthearted manner helped him battle his health issues over the past 44 years. Per his request samples of his body tissues were harvested by Mayo Clinic for research and teaching for the advancement of studies in mixed connective tissue disease.
The family especially wants to thank Dr. Dan Allen and Dr. Roshan Lewis of Iowa Health Physicians, Dr. Ashrani and Dr. Chowdhary of Mayo Clinic, Minnesota and all the wonderful nurses that cared for him over the years.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, with a 7:00 p.m. vigil service at McLaren’s Funeral Home in West Des Moines. Memorials can be directed to the Mayo Clinic (for Mixed Connective Tissue Disease Research) or St. Augustin Catholic Church in memory of Jary J. Gaudineer.
