Born February 28, 1937 to Charles Luther (Dick) Bruckshaw and Lucile Farrington Bruckshaw. John was raised in Centerville, Iowa. John graduated from Centerville High School and attended the University of Iowa. It was in Centerville where John met his childhood neighbor and ultimately the love of his life, Susan Anderson. Together for more than 70 years, they married in August 1958.
John was a “salesman’s salesman”. He worked for Northwestern Mutual Life as a district agent from 1959-1965, spent two years with Northwest Portland Cement, ultimately taking a role and spending the bulk of his professional career at Iowa Concrete Products (Cretex) for 31 years. Retiring at age 62, John enjoyed spending his time between Lake Panorama and West Des Moines. An avid golfer, he often played 7 days a week. At 87, John was still playing 18 holes enjoying his weekly men’s group, MIA.
John was in his glory when working outside. Throughout the years, he grew spectacular flowers, vegetable gardens, and tended the public gardens in Panora, IA. This passion for gardening led John back to school resulting in his certification as a Master Gardner.
John was devout man of faith. He was a member of St John’s United Methodist Church and Valley United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. He loved singing in choir and was an active participant in the “back row” singing group. He taught Sunday school for many years, served on the church’s Foundation Board, and participated in the Men’s group.
Throughout his life, John was an active philanthropist. There was rarely a cause where John did not contribute in some meaningful way. He volunteered weekly at Meals for the Heartland. Additionally, he was a long-time member within Masons, Scottish Rite, Shrine and Jesters.
John will be remembered for having an infectious laugh and the best smile. He told wonderful stories and smile inducing jokes. John made friends instantly. He was kind, generous, sensitive and had an amazing sense of humor. Being a life-long Iowa Hawkeye fan, that sense of humor was often needed. He was the best Dad, and grandfather.
John is survived by his son Mike Bruckshaw (Sherri) of Johnston, IA, daughter Beth Kalmes (Jim) of Yardley, PA, son- in- law Todd Mack of Anderson, OH. Grandchildren Ben and Mitch Bruckshaw (Stephanie), Hannah Mack (Zak), Ellen Pottschmidt (Andrew) and Jack and Max Kalmes.
John was preceded in death by his beloved wife Susan, daughter Ann Mack and Sister Susan Hixenbaugh.
A private family service and burial will be held Tuesday, October 14th, 2025.
