John Robert Loughry 77 of West Des Moines passed away on August 9, 2026. Visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at McLaren’s Chapel. A celebration of life service will begin at 11 AM with internment in the columbarium immediately after the service. Memorials to honor John may be made to the food bank of Iowa.
John was born June 14, 1949, in Des Moines, Iowa to Robert and Mary (Rowe) Loughry. He grew up in Des Moines and attended Lincoln high school, graduating in 1967. He attended Iowa State University, where he met his wife, Laura Eckblom. They married in 1972 and were absolutely in love with each other until Laura‘s death in 2016. John began his working career at Woodford manufacturing in Des Moines. Woodford moved John and Laura to Colorado. Always an avid learner, John attended the University of Northern Colorado and completed his master’s degree there. The couple lived in Colorado Springs before eventually returning to Iowa. He worked for Wells Fargo for 18 years and retired from there in 2022.
John was known for his benevolent heart. He was kind, generous, and always put the welfare of others above himself. His love of detail and precision was evident in the creativity and handiwork he displayed in his woodworking, gardening, and cooking. John was a member of Saint Francis of Assisi church.
Those left to cherish his memory are his sister, Sharon Williams, brother and sister-in-law, David and Judi Loughry, and his sister and brother-in-law, Ila and Kendall Miller. Nephews, Lucas (Charity) Smith, Cody (Dania) Miller and Clint (Lauren) Miller along with nieces Karrie Sirota, Sherrie Williams and Jennifer (Michael) Rueber. Also, many great nephews and great nieces. Also cherishing John’s life and memories are his very precious neighbors, Cody and Londa Crigger with their children Cloe, McClain, Carson and Maddox.
John is preceded in death by his wife Laura, his parents, Robert and Mary Loughry, an older brother, George Loughry, a nephew, Bryon Loughry and his brother-in-law, Rodger Williams.
