Lucy Kern, 88, of Clive passed away on Sunday May 31, 2026, at Woodlands Creek in Clive. A Graveside Service will be held on Monday June 29th at 11:00 a.m. at McLaren’s Resthaven Chapel & Mortuary in West Des Moines.
Lucy Luetta (Bench) Kern was born September 17, 1937, to Virgil and Hattie Clark Bench in Eldridge, Mo. The family moved to Van Meter and later to Waukee, she was a graduate of Waukee High School.
Lucy married Pierre Kern but later divorced. She continued farming for many years.
Although she was not a member of a church, she was faithful to reading the bible daily. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting until recent years when it became difficult for her to do. Her real passion was gardening; she loved growing things and sharing her knowledge and bountiful harvest with those she loved.
Lucy will be deeply missed by sibling: Loren Bench; nephews Terry Bench, Daniel Bench, Eric Bench; nieces Deb Buck, Erin Goodson.
She is preceded by siblings: Harold Bench, Lonnie Bench.
