Peggy Albertson, 97, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, November 29, 2013 at Edgewater in West Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at McLaren’s Chapel with burial at Resthaven Cemetery.
Peggy was born September 4, 1916, in Milo, Iowa, to Loran and Juniata (Runyan) Niles. The youngest of four children, Peggy had three brothers, John Gaylord, Luther Dale and Charles (Red) Niles. After attending Milo High School she graduated from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. She was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy serving on Guam in the Pacific during World War II. Peggy married Gordon L. Albertson in 1946 and settled in Des Moines where they raised three children. She was a registered nurse for a long and varied career that included private and institutional practice.
Peggy was a longtime member of the American Legion, Eastern Star and St. Mark Lutheran Church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and Navy nurse. She embraced life in a caring and generous way with everyone she knew. She expressed her love with immediate support, compassion and by finding joy in every aspect of life.
Peggy is survived by her husband, Gordon of 67 years; daughter, Paulette (Neal) Metts; two sons, Steve (Faith Hodkiewicz) Albertson and Kip (Debbie) Albertson; four grandchildren, Jessica Fortin, Nicole Metts, Ashley Schott and Kurt Albertson; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time Monday at McLaren’s. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to St. Mark Lutheran Church.
