Martha Jean Foss, 94, passed away on February 6, 2024 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. Funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, February 10, 2024 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (1627 Grand Avenue, West Des Moines) with burial at Resthaven Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time at the church.
Martha was born to William and Marie Dilks on April 15, 1929 in Holden, MO. She grew up in Carlisle, IA where she graduated from Carlisle High School. She joined the Navy in 1952 and was stationed in San Diego, CA. On December 5, 1953, Martha married Robert Foss at the Little Chapel of the Roses in Chula Vista, CA. Martha and Bob were married for 68 years when he passed away in 2022. Martha was a devoted homemaker and worked as a librarian at Sacred Heart School. In her later years she enjoyed her grandchildren and eventually her great grandchildren.
Martha is survived by her daughters, Debbie Foss of Urbandale and Janet (Dan) Dylla of Wells, MN; grandchildren, Whitney (Mike) Sheely of Mapleton, MN, Dustin (Kristie) Dylla of Wells, MN, William (Crystal) Hummer of Kansas City, MO, Alexxis Hummer of MO; great-grandchildren Charlotte, Elsie and Emma Sheely, Peyton and Kacie Dylla, Karson Herston, Maddison and William Hummer Jr.; along with numerous nieces and nephews and a very special cat named Snickers. She is also survived by her three sisters, Billie, Joyce and Sandy. Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; two brothers, Jerry and Bobby; and her twin sister, Margaret.
