Martin “Marty” McNeil Schuchat, 76, passed away during surgery in Scottsdale, Arizona on Friday, March 18, 2022. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 30, 2022 at McLaren’s Resthaven Chapel in West Des Moines, Iowa with burial following at Resthaven Cemetery. Marty is survived by his wife, Julie of 31 years; daughter Rendy Schuchat (Greg Vollan), Chicago, Illinois; stepson Jeffrey Lynch (Kirstin); grandchildren Ethan and Lily Lynch, Phoenix, Arizona, siblings; Bradley Schuchat (Susan), Lakewood Ranch, Florida, Kathy Corbin Schuchat, Andover, Kansas; nephew Michael Schuchat (Kyleigh) Lakewood Ranch, Florida.
Marty was born on September 14, 1945 in St. Louis, Missouri to parents Victor and Alice Schuchat. He and his family moved to Des Moines in 1950. Marty attended Roosevelt High School and graduated in 1963. He played on the varsity golf team and lettered his junior and senior years. He attended the University of Iowa and graduated in 1968. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He also graduated as a Distinguished Military Student in the U.S. Army ROTC program.
Marty was commissioned to the U.S Army in 1968 through ROTC and entered active duty the following year as a second lieutenant in the Transportation Corps at Fort Polk, Louisiana. He quickly earned the rank of First Lieutenant and was stationed in Seoul, South Korea with the 728th Military Police Battalion. Marty also completed many Special Duty assignments in South Korea and Vietnam during the 13 months he was overseas. One of his assignments was to transport prisoners back to Fort Leavenworth, which allowed him the opportunity to see family in Iowa. Before leaving the Army in 1972, Marty earned the rank of Captain and finished his service with the Transportation Corps at Fort Carson, Colorado. During his military service, Marty was twice awarded The Army Commendation Metal with First Oak Leaf Clusters for meritorious service, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Metal and the National Defense Service Medal.
Marty started his business career with Coty Cosmetics and quickly became their top sales representative. He entered his career as a life insurance professional with Connecticut General, achieving the distinguished awards of Man of the Year, President’s Club and qualifying as a member of the Million Dollar Round Table for many years. Marty and his brother, Brad Schuchat formed Financial Marketing Services in 1983 and represented many life insurance companies over the next 20 years. He was a top producer for the agency, focusing on estate and financial planning. Marty continued his insurance career for 8 years in Arizona with Farm Bureau Financial Services.
Marty was a scratch golfer most of his life, making 5 holes in one over his golfing years. He grew up playing golf at the Des Moines Golf and Country Club in West Des Moines, Iowa and was a member there for over 36 years. Marty’s golfing achievements included winning multiple junior and men’s club championships at the Des Moines Golf and Country Club. He also won the 1970 Korea Support Command Open while in the Army.
Marty and Julie moved from Des Moines to Scottsdale, Arizona in 2002. For the next 20 years, Marty enjoyed working, volunteering at Mayo Clinic and playing golf year round. Golf was a big part of his life. He loved to collect golf memorabilia and had lots of golf equipment! Marty was an avid fan of Iowa Hawkeye football.
Marty was a wonderful husband, loving father, devoted brother, special papa, proud soldier and loyal friend. He was a very humble, generous man who found joy giving to others. Everyone liked Marty. He was a guy others wanted to be around. He was someone you knew you could count on and he really cared about you. Family meant everything to Marty. He always had stories to share and they were delivered with his great sense of humor. Marty loved life and will be missed by all.
