Norman D. Mitchell, 84, peacefully returned to God on September 18, 2024 in the loving presence of his family.
Norm was born on October 18, 1939 in Fairmont, Minnesota to Donald and Benita Mitchell. The family later moved to Burt, Iowa. Norm then graduated from Drake University in 1962 and started a long career building great customer relationships and selling life insurance and automobiles in Des Moines, Iowa. Norm was never afraid to strike up a conversation with anyone and built loyal customers and friendships throughout his whole life.
After college, Norm met the love of his life, Sondra Borg, of Des Moines, Iowa, and the couple were married on May 18, 1963. Their love and marriage lasted over 61 years and brought three beautiful girls into the world.
Norm was an avid card and game player. He loved anything outdoors - hunting, fishing, boating, picnics, road trips, and always caring meticulously for his lawn. Norm had a great sense of humor and was known by many for his practical jokes and fun. He was always the life of the party. Most of all, though, Norm loved being with his family and had a heart of gold. He was the most caring, loving wonderful husband, father and grandfather any family could ever hope for.
Norm was preceded in death by his parents and precious granddaughter, Taylor. He is survived by his wife, Sondra of Des Moines, Iowa; three daughters and their husbands, Ronda and David Kaufman of Highland Park, Illinois, Marsha and Chris Gunnare of Urbandale, Iowa, Michelle and Dick Sapp of Waukee, Iowa; grandchildren, Lauren Charlton (Brandon) of Grimes, Iowa, Katie Rose (Wesley) of Urbandale, Iowa, Jordan and Samantha Kaufman of Highland Park, Illinois, Jared and Ashley Sapp of West Des Moines, Iowa; twin great-grandsons; three sisters; a brother; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family would like to thank the wonderful and caring teams at Mill Pond senior living community and St. Croix Hospice, both located in Ankeny, Iowa.
A Celebration of Life Open House will be hosted by the family on Saturday September 28, 2024 from 1:00 to 4:00pm at Lutheran Church of Hope, 925 Jordan Creek Pkwy, West Des Moines, Iowa 50266.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the St. Croix Hospice, located at 1555 SE Delaware Ave, Ankeny, Iowa 50021.
