Preston Miles

Preston Miles passed away on July 16, 2026, on his 79th birthday after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He was born to Lee and Sallie Miles in Petersburg, Virginia, and graduated from Peabody High School. Preston served in the Army during the Vietnam War and earned several honors. He lived in many cities throughout his life, but West Des Moines was the home where he spent most of his years.

Preston is survived by his wife, Ann, and sons Steven (Jennifer), Benjamin, and Marcus. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Sallie Miles, brother Herbert (Mary), and sister

Shirley.

Preston and Ann were married on August 13, 1994 in Des Moines, IA, and treasured their almost 32 years of loving marriage together.

Preston was a “Jack of all trades” with many careers and passions. He held season tickets with the Kansas City Chiefs for 35+ years and never missed a game. He loved Sam Cooke, James Brown, the Temptations, and knew every song the Soultown Station played. Preston made the best BBQ ribs in town and was always researching recipes for the parties he so loved hosting, especially the Super Bowl and his “Backyard Bash.”

He was so proud of his sons. He would tell everyone about their accomplishments and adventures with love and pride in his face and voice. Steven’s mother, Carla, was married to Preston on July 9th, 1988, and remains a beloved member of the Miles family.

Regaining connection to his military service later in life was important to Preston. He was active in VFW Post 8879 Emerick Williams of Valley Junction and served as Senior Vice Commander. He was most proud of the annual Fun Day and spent every Veteran’s Day eating, laughing and reminiscing with his “comrades.”

Visitation will be held at McClaren’s at Resthaven on Monday, July 27th from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.. Funeral services will be held at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in West Des Moines Tuesday, July 28th at 10:00 am. Military burial will be held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery following the service.

The family kindly requests donations to Central Iowa Veterans Hospital or Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in lieu of flowers.
