West Des Moines
Rachel Carmen Murillo left us peacefully, June 25, 2010, surrounded by family at Mercy Hospital in West Des Moines. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in West Des Moines with burial to follow at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.
Rae was born on February 22, 1930 to Louis Murillo and Francisca Moreno. She was the tenth child born of 11 children. She was a lifetime resident of West Des Moines (Valley Junction) where she attended elementary school and Valley High. She retired from Younker Brothers downtown department store after 40 years of service. She was a longtime member of The Woman's Auxiliary and Honorary member of the Legion of Mary at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a member of the West Des Moines Senior Community Center.
Rae was a fantastic cook and was known for her gourmet recipes and Mexican cuisine. As our family historian she was our source of wonderful family stories and held many Murillo generations captive with her loving remembrances of growing up during WWII and living in Hyde Park with her brothers and sisters. Her quick wit and sense of humor will be missed by the many that knew and loved her.
Rachel is survived by her two brothers, Louis (Laura) Murillo and Jack (Barbara) Murillo and sister, Josephine (Joaquin) Bejarno. She will also be missed by a host of nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis & Francisca Murillo; brother, Joseph Murillo and sisters, Trinidad Diaz, Frances Bates, Solidad Clark and Socorro Diaz.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday at McLaren’s Chapel in West Des Moines where a Vigil and Rosary Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Melana Hammond.
