Robert Arlen Nuzum Sr., 81, passed peacefully on January 17, 2019 surrounded by his family and friends. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, January 20, 2019 at New Hope United Methodist Church in Des Moines. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at McLaren’s Chapel in West Des Moines with burial at Resthaven Cemetery.
Bob was born March 24, 1937, in Des Moines to Sam and Hazel Nuzum. During his eventful life he owned the Martin Hotel and was active in the renovation of the downtown area. He was a lifelong learner and attended Drake Law School. Bob also managed the Camp Dodge pool the final 13 years it was open. He started several businesses, served in the U.S. Navy, and was a Shriner. Bob was a member of the Downtown YMCA for most of his life where he made many lifelong friends. Bob ran in the first 25 Dam to Dam Marathons. He wanted everyone to know that God loves us so much that he sent His son so we could have eternal life. Bob was a member of New Hope UMC in Des Moines. He was very proud of his Irish Heritage and the Nuzum Family.
Bob is survived by his wife of 36 years, Billy; children, Robert Jr. (Ronda), Steve (Korrenia), Debbie, Matthew (Melissa), and Nathan (Marcia). He is survived by 70 family members that includes, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Donald; son, Samuel; and granddaughter, Amber.
