Ronald Dale Scott, 85, a long time Des Moines broadcasting and advertising icon, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2022.
Ron was born on March 25, 1937 to Dale and Irene Scott in Cherokee, Iowa, where he spent his younger years. In 1955, as he told it, he packed his 1947 Chevy with all the clothes he owned and headed for Iowa State College (later to become Iowa State University) where he intended to major in the radio and television curriculum. But before long his incredibly smooth voice was discovered and he began working for WOI radio and television as an announcer. He was soon promoted to Chief Announcer and became an important part of WOI's programing. He served as the long time on-air host of "Seventeen," the popular WOI-TV teen dance program and in 1958 was selected as one of several summer substitutes for Dick Clark on his nationally broadcast "American Bandstand" on the ABC television network. For several years Ron also played the silent but very funny "Claude" on the very popular WOI-TV Saturday night movie program "Grave's End Manor."
Following his time at WOI, Ron got into the marketing business and eventually started his own one-man advertising agency in Des Moines. In the early 70's, he merged his company with another agency to form Love Scott and Associates. He served as co-owner and Executive Vice President of the advertising firm and was an important reason the agency became well known for many years in the industry for its creativity and media buying expertise. For more than 30 years, Love Scott and Associates served more than 80 different clients in all kinds of commercial and non-profit enterprises in Des Moines, Central Iowa, and the Midwest. After retiring from the advertising business, Ron kept busy happily working part time for Accurate Development.
Ron's ornery smile and impish twinkle in his eye will be missed by many. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Beverly, and their children Kevin (Brenda) Johnson, Kim (Jeremy) Kroll, Kate (Thane) Peterson, Ron (Maura) Scott and eleven wonderful grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, and brothers Dick and Roger.
The family would like to invite you to join them for drinks and appetizers at a celebration of Ron's life on Saturday, June 25, from 5 to 7 pm at West 48 Conference Center 1601 - 48th Street in West Des Moines.
In lieu of flowers, plants and gifts, memorials in Ron's memory may be directed to John Stoddard Cancer Center.
