Sharon Jenn Barton

Sharon Jenn Barton, 73 of Frisco, Texas (formerly of Urbandale) died March 16, 2011 at Baylor Medical Center in Plano, Texas following a lengthy illness. Sharon was born February 24, 1938 in Des Moines, Iowa of Elizabeth (Betty) and Ferrel (Bud) Barton. She grew up in Urbandale graduating from Urbandale High School in 1956. She pursued a career in dental hygiene after graduating from the University of Iowa. She was an instructor at the School of Dental Hygiene, College of Dentistry, Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI and College of Dentistry, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Sharon founded and directed the School of Dental Hygiene at the University of South Dakota, Vermillion and established the curriculum for the Dental Hygiene Program, College of Dentistry at the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, retiring in 1976. She received her Master’s Degree from the University of Central Oklahoma, Edmond in Counseling Psychology in 1976. Sharon always pursued knowledge and proved to be especially sensitive to children in need. She continued her professional career working at the Department of Pediatrics, Children’s Memorial Hospital in Oklahoma City. Her hobbies were working crossword puzzles, reading and traveling. Much of her travel included watching her friends show their beautiful Morgan horses. When she moved to Frisco, Texas she made many new friends with her warmth and humor. Sharon’s winning smile and love of life endeared her to family and friends. She will be missed by all. She is survived by an extended family, Betty Durland, Barbara Barton Kellogg (Jim), their sons Patrick Kellogg and Barton J. Kellogg (Jennifer) and their daughter Alexandra; Karen Barton Casten (Lee), their sons Douglas Casten (Kathy) and David Casten, sons Alexander and Markus Casten. The family extends a special thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff of Baylor Medical Center, ICU at Plano, Texas for their love and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations be given in memory of Sharon Barton to Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano, 3600 Gaston Ave S 100, Dallas, TX 75246. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 PM, Saturday, April 2, 2011 at Resthaven Cemetery, West Des Moines, Iowa with a reception following at Des Moines Golf and Country Club.
