

Sherry-Mae passed away November 28, 2025. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, December 5, 2025 at McLaren’s Resthaven Chapel in West Des Moines followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. at McLaren’s. Burial will follow the service at Resthaven Cemetery.
Sherry-Mae was born December 11, 1946 in Des Moines to Melvin and Shirley (Rupp) Wellen. She was married on January 3, 1976 to Robert Hedgecock and the two would have celebrated their 50th Anniversary this coming January. Sherry-Mae was primarily a homemaker most of her working life but for over 20 years she could be seen as the crossing guard at 22nd and Ashworth Road in West Des Moines. She enjoyed seeing all the kids through the years and even the 2nd generations and would make treats for them on certain occasions. Sherry-Mae loved her cat, Snowball, plants, gardening, and helping others in need. She had excellent typing skills and would help type school papers. When she put her mind to something she would make it happen and was a very hard worker. She was and an amazing seamstress and loved to sew, antique, listen to gospel music, and craft which she passed down to her daughter Celeste. Sherry-Mae and Robert fostered children and adopted two children. She showed them the love of Jesus and made it possible to learn and have a relationship with Him.
Sherry-Mae is survived by her husband, Robert; daughter, Celeste (Simon) Kenworthy; son, Zachary (Alicia) Hedgecock; sister, Claudia Bowen; grandchildren, Dylan Chamberlain, Paige (Brandon) Quinn, Clarissa Chamberlain, Jacob and Patrick Hedgecock, Emily (Thomas) Kenealy, Natalie and AnnMarie Hedgecock; and great-grandchildren, Sawyer Hedgecock, Briella Chamberlain and Adelyn Quinn. She was preceded in death by both of her parents in 2008; brother, Melvin Wellen in 1989; and sister, Joy Reed in 2017.
