Shirley A. Zimmerman, 81, passed away Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at Taylor House Hospice. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Friday at McLaren’s Chapel with burial at Resthaven Cemetery.

Shirley was born September 26, 1935 in Waterloo, IA to Ernest and Freda Opdahl. She attended schools in Waterloo and Des Moines, graduating from Roosevelt High School. She married Frank W. Zimmerman in Des Moines on September 9, 1956. Shirley retired as an accounting supervisor in 1990 after working 25 years for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. She had lived in Des Moines, Burlington, Urbandale, Clive and Johnston.

Shirley belonged to many organizations, including the Retired Telephone Pioneers, the Cancer Society (cancer support group), and was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Shari (Shawn) Stevenson of Johnston; son, Craig (Kelli) Zimmerman of Urbandale; six grandchildren, Nathaniel (Erin) Stevenson and Amanda Stevenson, Mallory (Ames) Cross, and McKenna, Meredith and Mason Zimmerman; great-grandson, Bennett Cross; and brother, Jack Opdahl of Cedar Rapids. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; her parents; and sister-in-law, Donna Opdahl.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until service time Friday at McLaren’s Chapel. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society.
