Curtis was a master crafstman, and specialized in boatwright carpentry. He was very well known for making custom tillers for racing sailboats, and personally designed and built many wooden boats from scratch.
Curtis enjoyed perfecting his craft, driving his many sports cars just for the love of the road, and surrounding himself in the beauty of nature; particularly at Bell's Neck in Harwich, where he would spend many hours watching and photographing the family of swans that live there.
