David was born in Milford, Massachusetts on November 11, 1943 and moved to the Cape with his family in 1952. He was predeceased by his father, Charles F. Coleman, and his mother, Antoinette (Deflumaro) Coleman.
He is survived by his wife, Betsy (Gardner) Coleman of 56 years, his two children, Lisa (Coleman) Mahieu of Harwich, MA and Jonathan Coleman and his significant other, Victoria Donovan of Yarmouth, MA, as well as his two grandchildren, Samantha Coleman and Jonathan Coleman, Jr. both of Harwich, MA. He is also survived by his two brothers, Mark J. Coleman and his wife Holly of Harwich, MA and Charles Coleman, Jr. of North Zulch, TX also several nieces and nephews.
David graduated from Bristol County Agricultural School in 1963. After graduation he worked for the Harwich Highway Department and then went on to work in the various Coleman family businesses. David then ventured out on his own in the 70’s as David R. Coleman Remodeling and Painting Contractor for over 30 years. He was truly loved by all of his customers.
David loved fishing and boating as well as owning a few classic cars which he liked enjoying with others in the Cape Cod Classic Car Club. In his younger years he was active in the Harwich Jaycees, Harwich Sea Scouts, and the Cape Cod Rough Riders. David often spoke about special times he spent hunting with his uncles Harold and Al.
In 1965 David married his high school sweetheart, Betsy (Gardner) Coleman, who was an avid lover of horses. He also became involved with horses which then grew into an entire family affair that many Coleman family members became well known for in the community. One of David’s favorite places to hand out at as a teenager was Delorey’s Sinclair Station in Harwich Port.
Over the years he enjoyed spending time with his family and meeting friends for coffee at various places in Harwich Port. He had a unique sense of humor and you had to know him to appreciate it. He will keep us all laughing for years to come. After retirement he enjoyed spending time at home and watching his favorite shows…Gunsmoke, Wagon Train, and CNBC just to name a few.
A graveside service will be held at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, 95 South St., Harwich Port, on Thursday, January 27, 2022 at 11:00 AM. Rev. Douglas Scalise of the Brewster Baptist Church will officiate. A Celebration of David's life will immediately follow the graveside service in Monbleau Hall at the Pilgrim Congregational Church in Harwich Port. Donations in David’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s own choosing.
