Douglas Ralph Kenney passed on April 7, 2026, at the age of 91, having been born on October 23, 1934, in Stoneham, Massachusetts to Dr Ralph Kenney and his wife Dorothy (Babbage) Kenney. He grew up in Melrose MA along with his younger sister Cynthia. Doug is preceded in death by his former wife Sandra Lee (Lyman) Kenney. He has two biological children, a son Randall C Kenney, a daughter Robin C Kenney and a beloved foster daughter Gina Fournier. He also has 4 grandsons, Mitchell, Colin, Jonathan, and Peter. Doug traveled an interesting and exciting path in life. He graduated from Suffolk University in MA with a degree in Chemistry. He then received a research fellowship at the University of Wisconsin where he was awarded a Masters degree in Geochemistry in 1958. One year later he was drafted in to the Army to serve as a radiation chemist from 1959-1961. In his spare time while serving in the Army at Camp McKoy in WI he built a 14 foot cut-away model of a rocket using scrap metal. After his Army assignment he was hired by the University of Wisconsin to do a nationwide school assembly tour teaching rocket science. He later became known as “Computer Kenney” opening a computer camp called “Camp On-Line” on the shores of Black River Falls, WI teaching for 5 years. Following computer camp he bought a yacht named The Mahogany Lady in New Orleans, LA and spent the next 3 years sailing the west coast of FL with his wife and two young children eventually porting in Key West, FL. It was here he sold the boat and moved back home to Cape Cod, MA where his mother resided in South Dennis. He became the Bass River Harbor Master in the summer and taught ice skating lessons at the Cape Cod Coliseum in the winter. He also became involved with woodworking and was hired by IWCS (International Wood Collectors Society) to tour the US teaching woodworking. His daughter Robin introduced her best friend Gina who was in the foster system and he gave her a place to call home. As Gina continues to live on Cape Cod, she was in his life during his final moments providing love and comfort which is so appreciated by Randy and Robin who live several states away in the mid west. In 2012 Doug had a stroke and he went to stay at Regal Care of Harwich where he continued to share his love and knowledge of science by writing a monthly news letter called “Through the Lens of Science.” He spent much of his adult life as an atheist but throughout his years at Regal Care he was visited frequently by a pastor named Christian Holleck. It was by Christian’s influence and care that Doug came to know God and is quoted as saying, “While we’re seeking extra intelligence, God is seeking our fellowship.” Doug will be laid to rest at the VA cemetery in Bourne, MA on June 15, 2026 at 11:15 am with full military honors. All friends are welcome to attend.
