Kathleen Wensley "Wendy" Hughes Halladay of South Yarmouth, MA passed away peacefully with her family by her side on January 12, 2026. Wendy was born on November 9, 1934, in Denver, Co. She was the daughter of Francis Gerald and Emeline (Wensley) Hughes, and the granddaughter of Richard and Maude (Walker) Wensley and Michael and Katherine (Joyce) Hughes. Wendy grew up in Denver. She graduated from Denver East High School and studied at Stephens College in Columbia, MO and Denver University where she first met Allan "Buzz" Halladay. They were married in 1955 and raised their four children, Richard, Gayle, Jeffrey and Julie, in Providence and in Barrington, RI. Wendy loved her family and loved caring for her children at home, always with a pug or two by her side. Her pugs, Duke, Lady Emily and Lady Honey were her loyal companions. Wendy was happiest spending weekends with the family all together in Vermont. She enjoyed cooking hearty meal favorites, playing card games by the fire, hosting friends at the family chalet and an occasional ski day in winter; and planning picnics and swimming at Hapgood Pond and Emerald Lake in summer. The family also spent summers on Cape Cod enjoying days sunning at the beach, swimming and boating. As a Girl Scout leader, Wendy enjoyed teaching her amazing sewing skills to the young girls in her daughter, Gayle's troop. Wendy completed her education in 1981, earning her BA in Speech Communications with High Honors at the University of Rhode Island while working as Office Manager at the Audubon Society of Rhode Island in Providence. There she developed a newfound interest in nature and wildlife, and began collecting prints, fabrics and homeware that included her favorite bunny and bird designs. She loved being outdoors, taking walks and especially, tending to her gardens. Wendy was also an avid reader and collector of great literary classics, poetry and children's books, becoming a member of several book clubs throughout her life. Proud of her family heritage, she spent hours researching her genealogy, tracing and documenting her family history and building a family tree. Wendy moved to West Dennis on the Cape permanently in 1984. There she fulfilled an ambition of designing her dream home where her children and grandchildren came for visits and vacations. She worked in home decorating and interior design for many years. And, with an eye for color and fabrics she sewed beautiful draperies and furniture and pillow covers at home. She was a gifted quilter, as well, creating intricate quilt patterns and sewing them for her home and family, and as a member of the Bayberry Quilters Guild of Cape Cod, she donated to veterans, children and families in need through The Quilt Bank. Playing games like Mah Jongg, Hearts and Bridge with friends were also favorite pastimes.
Wendy was a past member of the American Association of University Women AAUW. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi, Colorado Beta, 3rd generation Pi Beta Phi. She was past President Pi Beta Phi Carnation Circle Cape Cod, member of P.E.O. Chapter 17J, past President of P.E.O. Chapter 17C, a member of Bayberry Quilters Guild of Cape Cod, a volunteer at Ma Audubon, Wellfleet Wildlife Sanctuary and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution DAR.
Wendy lived quietly with intelligence, curiosity and purpose, and with a strong faith. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. She leaves behind her sons, Richard (Elizabeth) of Barrington, RI and Jeffrey (Claire) of East Providence, RI, and her daughter, Julie of Sylvania, Oh. She also leaves behind six beloved grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Wendy was predeceased by her daughter, Gayle Halladay of Dubois, Wy and her sister, Jan Hughes of Denver, Co.
A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Fairmount Cemetery in Denver, Co and a Celebration of Life service for family and friends will take place in Rhode Island at a later date to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Wendy's memory to the Pi Beta Phi Foundation, 1154 Town & Country Commons Drive, Town & Country, MO 63017. The Foundation supports programs in leadership, literacy, housing and the Emma Harper Turner Fund for women in crises.
