
Leighton A. Clapp Jr. of Dennis Port passed away peacefully on November 13 at Cape Cod Hospital at the age of 89. He was married to the late Winnifred H. (Edwards) Clapp for 60 years. He is survived by his son David J. Clapp, his daughter in law Susan H. Clapp, and his two grand daughters Stephanie E. Clapp and Kimberly V. Clapp, all of Chelmsford and Dennis Port.
Born in 1921, Mr. Clapp grew up in Milton and graduated from Milton High School. Upon graduation, he became employed at the Pneumatic Scale Corporation in Quincy where he remained for 43 years and retired as chief draftsman.
Mr. Clapp served in WWII in the 9th Air Force with the 366 fighter squadron in Europe. During his tour, he served as an armorer responsible for maintaining and repairing the weapon systems of the squad’s planes.
Upon his return from the war, Mr. Clapp was married in 1947 and settled in Hanover, MA where he remained for over 35 years. During that time he was very active in community affairs. He was a mason with the Phoenix Lodge A.F & A.M in Hanover and received his 50 year award. He was a Deacon of The First Congregational Church in Hanover. In addition, he was active with Troop 37 of the Boy Scouts of America and assisted with the coaching of many of his son’s youth sports teams.
Mr. Clapp had a passion for singing as an active member of the First Congregational Church Choir in Hanover. Upon his retirement, he sang with the Pilgrim Church Choir in Harwich as well as the Pilgrim Pops Chorus, the Mid Cape Chorus, and the Retired Men’s Chorus of Cape Cod.
In his spare time, Mr. Clapp was a skilled craftsman having fully renovated his first home in Hanover as well as the two 180 year old homes currently owned by the family in Dennis Port. He also built a small cottage by himself in South Dennis in the 50’s.
Mr. Clapp was an avid fan of the Red Sox, Celtics, and Patriots and was a member of the Dennis Pines Golf Course for almost 20 years. He was also a regular fixture in the stands of the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox of the Cape Cod League.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 20 at the Swan Lake Cemetery in Dennis Port at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Clapp Memorial Music Fund at The First Congregational Church, 17 Silver St., Ste 201, Hanover, MA 02339-1980
