I remember so many things about my Uncle Willie, but there are two things that stand out in my mind. One is the way he made me feel when I was a pimple-faced, big nose, awkward teenager. When Uncle Willie came to vist, he would flash his Clark Gable smile at me and say:  "You just keep getting prettier and prettier every day." He would continue to say this even into my more "together" adult years. I can still feel the warm, wonderful feeling from his words.

The second thing was the way he exemplified a good Christian man. He was strong and quiet. A man of few words who followed the bible's teachings to control your tongue. He was not for gossiping or speaking ill of anyone. He would rather be silent than say something that could not be taken back.

Uncle Willie, I looooooooove you for ever and ever.

To My Godfather: I Remember…..

I remember my trips to Harwich as a child and leaving so late at night that I fell asleep and you had to carry me to the car (sometimes I wasn’t sleeping). 

I remember the times we shared at the pond behind your house and us trying to catch a fish.

I remember the money you would always secretively put in the palm of my hand as you said goodbye to me.

I remember you always stopping by our house in Wareham every Friday to visit-- just before you went to Nana’s (Alice Silva) house for supper.

I remember my mother (Mollie Campinha) and you sitting in our parlor playing Cape Verdean tunes on your guitars---my mother would be singing.

I remember, as a very small child, the first time I gave you a hello hug, took a deep breathe and said the words, “I l-ooooooooooooooo-ve you.  Sometimes the “oooooooooooooooo” would last for almost a minute (or longer). I am glad I did this special greeting up until the last time I saw you in 2010 ( I was 58 years old).

I remember you being “Brother” to my mother (Mollie Campinha), aunt (Shirley Spencer) & uncle (Oliver Silva, Jr.).  They always used this term so affectingly and with pride.

I remember how you always made sure we knew our Livramento family.

I remember and miss your comforting presence.

My tears and prayers are with all my East Coast cousins, at this very sad time.  I was so fortunate to have made contact with Wilfred, just by chance he gave a person his address, that was from Sacramento, visiting in the East, that would know his cousins that he visited when he was in the air force.  To hear his voice was such a happy reminder that after all these years, the cousins finally made contact.  We had so much to talk about, he introduced me to his family, it was like a dream come true.  Because of a terrible auto accident, I was unable to make the trip out to see him in person, that adds such sadness to my heart, but I know in the future we will meet again.
