Alice Taggs Hessing was born Anna Alice Taggs on May 20th, 1924 to Alice Marion Doran Taggs and George Isaacs Taggs in the Borough of Brooklyn, New York. As a student she studied commercial business and graduated Jamaica Evening High School in June 1942.
During World War II, Alice served as a secretary on the staff of General George C. Marshall.
After World War II in February, 1946, she married Henry W. Hessing of Valley Stream. Henry and Alice became members of Saint Luke’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Farmingdale, NY in April, 1947. Later in life, Alice joined Westminster United Presbyterian Church in West Islip. She taught Sunday school every week for over twenty years and was named to the Church Session. As a member of Session, she served as secretary. One of her favorite hymns is based on the 90th Psalm, “Our God, Our Help in Ages Past”.
Alice Hessing passed from death to eternal life on May 24th, 2020. She is the beloved mother of Henry W Hessing Jr. of South Carolina, David A. Hessing (deceased), Paul D. Hessing of Maryland and Donna Hessing Krupin of Wading River, Long Island. She is the proud grandmother of Ted and Matt Hessing and Daniel and Emily Krupin. And, she is the great grandmother of three boys and a girl.
Alice Taggs Hessing worked for the New York State Department of Transportation, Region 10, serving for thirty years as a stenographer, typist and various secretarial positions. She became the Regional Director’s Secretary and held that position for over twenty years. In March, 1987, the Department celebrated “Women’s History Month for those women who made significant contributions to the Department” In his nomination letter, the Regional Director wrote, “her calm demeanor and razor sharp skills have allowed her to work well under enormous pressure”. He continued saying that, “Alice was an invaluable asset to me and I feel that she is more than deserving of this honor”.
