Anne C. Miller, a pioneering stockbroker and cherished socialite, passed away quietly on February 9, 2025 at her home in Palm Beach, just weeks shy of her 103rd birthday. She was born March 12, 1922 in New Haven, CT., the youngest of six children of Francisco and Teresa Cappiello. Her parents were immigrants from Italy. In the 1950’s, she moved to New York City, had a short-lived marriage and took the professional name, Anne Jennings Johnson. Afterward, she worked as a model, traveling the country and abroad, but soon developed a keen interest in finance and investing. She attended classes at the New York Institute of Finance and in 1962 joined A. G. Edwards & Sons, becoming their only female stockbroker at the time.
Mrs. Miller was a fierce believer in the power of investing and the ultimate bull when it came to picking stocks. Once on a TV talk show in 1965 she was quoted as saying, “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but blue chip stocks certainly are a second best.” Around that time, she was rumored to be on the verge of becoming the first woman to obtain a seat on the New York Stock Exchange, though ultimately that opportunity did not materialize. She would often explain that her firm, at the time, did not want to be known as the company to put the first woman on the Exchange. While she worked with a diverse clientele, Anne found great pride in advising women and modest investors who were less familiar with the intricacies of the stock market. She was a hard-driven woman who loved her work, advising her clients on how to invest for the long haul, working well into her 70’s and doing quite well for herself along the way. She enjoyed her rotating living arrangement, spending most of the year at her apartment in Manhattan’s upper east side, summers at her home in Southampton and winters in her condo in Palm Beach.
In 1972, Mrs. Miller married William Dawes Miller who soon after became president of the Anaconda Copper Company. The two of them were active members of the New York Athletic Club and Manhattan’s historic Metropolitan Club, where Mr. Miller served as president during the 1980’s, later passing away in 1993. Mrs. Miller was an avid golfer and tennis player in Southampton where, for decades she was a member of The Meadow Club of Southampton, Shinnecock Golf Club, and The Bathing Corporation of Southampton. She enjoyed her participation in charitable and fund-raising activities facilitated by her social clubs and was a generous benefactor to several non-profit organizations. During her winters in Palm Beach she enjoyed spending time with a wide circle of friends she knew through her membership in The Beach Club.
Mrs. Miller is left behind by several nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly. She was preceded in death by her brothers John Cappiello of Boynton Beach, FL, Nicholas Cappiello of New Haven, CT and Michael Cappiello of Boston, MA and her two sisters, Mary Carrano of West Palm Beach, FL and Sister Mary Dolorata of the Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor in Bronx, New York.
A memorial service and internment of the ashes service will be held at The Royal Poinciana Chapel , 60 Cocoanut Row, Palm Beach, FL 33480, at 11:30 am on Feb. 24, 2025. Family and friends are invited to attend. A reception with refreshments will be held afterwards. Arrangements are being made handled by the Quattlebaum Funeral Home of West Palm Beach.
