Avis Winsome Springer was born in Saint Pauls, Manchester, Jamaica, on June 22nd, 1954, to the late Adrian Roach and Edith Mundy.
Known as Winsome in her youth, she attended primary and secondary school in Manchester, and then Avis moved to Kingston. At the age of 26, Avis migrated to New York City. In 1984, Avis and her husband, Keith Springer, moved to southeastern Connecticut. Avis earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting from Thames Valley State Technical College and worked as a field auditor for the state of Connecticut for 20 years before retiring and moving to the warmth of Florida in 2012.
Avis never met a stranger, had a wealth of life experience, and was an advisor and confidant for many who sought guidance. She loved giving back to her community. She used her accounting background to serve as the treasurer for several non-profit organizations, including the Seventh Day Baptist South Atlantic Association and the Deep South Camp and Recreation Center. She volunteered to prepare taxes for the Royal Palm Beach community, and she took every opportunity to collect clothing items to distribute in Jamaica to individuals in need.
She was predeceased by her father, Adrian Roach, and mother, Edith Mundy. Her sisters Dawn Roach, Diana Dandy, and Angela Smith; brother Carl Roach; husband Keith Springer; and son Hamal Springer.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph Shenal; daughters Jani Springer and Faith Newell-Taylor; granddaughter Aryelle Newell; daughter-in-law, Ratha Ry-Springer; sisters, Marlene Williams, Patricia Smith-Symister; several aunts and uncles; and a host of cousins and friends around the world.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Avis’ name be made to:
